LAPD Probes New Year’s Eve Shooting Involving ICE Agent

Authorities are investigating a New Year’s Eve shooting involving an off-duty U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Northridge, Los Angeles. The incident resulted in the death of a man who, according to federal officials, was firing a weapon in the apartment complex.

LAPD Investigation of New Year’s Eve Shooting

Deputy LAPD Chief Alan Hamilton stated that the Robbery-Homicide Division is handling the investigation. This division typically investigates shootings involving officers from other agencies. The FBI, U.S. Department of Justice, and Homeland Security Investigations are also involved.

Details of the Incident

Initial reports indicate that the ICE agent responded to an “active shooter situation.” However, some residents speculated that the deceased was celebrating the new year by firing a gun into the air. Hamilton cautioned that it is “too early to tell” if that was the case. Investigators have not yet interviewed the agent involved due to procedural protocols for deadly force investigations involving federal officers.

Victim and Circumstances

  • The identity of the man killed has not been released.
  • Witnesses reported hearing gunfire and seeing multiple LAPD vehicles at the scene.
  • Emergency services received a call around 11:07 P.M. on New Year’s Eve regarding a male gunshot victim.

According to L.A. Fire spokesperson Margaret Stewart, the victim was believed to be in his 30s. Firefighters pronounced him dead at the scene. A makeshift memorial formed outside an apartment associated with the deceased, featuring candles and flowers.

Public Concern and Gun Safety

Residents expressed alarm over the shooting, with one noting that stray bullets had previously struck her apartment. Many believed they were hearing fireworks as midnight approached. Quinn Anderson, a local resident, stated, “It’s New Year’s Eve… I just assumed people were celebrating.”

Historically, law enforcement has warned against firing weapons into the air during celebrations, emphasizing that this act is a felony that can lead to severe consequences.

As the investigation continues, officials from the complex have yet to release a public statement regarding the incident. The circumstances surrounding this tragic event highlight ongoing concerns about gun safety and celebratory gunfire during holiday festivities.
