FBI Thwarts Alleged ISIS-Linked New Year’s Eve Attack in NC Grocery Store

The FBI has successfully disrupted an alleged plot to carry out a New Year’s Eve attack at a grocery store and fast food restaurant in Mint Hill, North Carolina. The suspect, Christian Sturdivant, an 18-year-old from Mint Hill, was arrested and charged with attempting to provide material support to ISIS, as announced by U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson.
Details of the FBI Investigation
The FBI’s quick response was highlighted by Director Kash Patel, emphasizing that the agency worked tirelessly over the holidays to protect the public. Patel credited their efforts for preventing a potentially deadly attack.
Evidence Seized from the Suspect
During the investigation, law enforcement conducted a search of Sturdivant’s residence on December 29, revealing:
- A blue hammer and a wooden-handled hammer
- Two butcher knives hidden beneath his bed
- Handwritten notes titled “New Year Attack 2026”
These documents detailed plans for the attack, including a list of intended targets and specific weapons. According to the complaint, Sturdivant expressed a desire to stab as many civilians as possible, with a goal of inflicting up to 21 casualties.
Online Communications with an Undercover Agent
The plot unraveled after Sturdivant began communicating with an individual he believed was an ISIS affiliate, but was actually a government undercover agent. In December, he stated, “I will do jihad soon,” revealing his intentions and self-identified loyalty to ISIS.
Background of the Suspect
Sturdivant, employed at a local Burger King, has a troubling history. The FBI first noted him in January 2022, when he was still a minor. Authorities were alerted to his social media posts advocating for ISIS and directed him towards mental health treatment.
Dangers of Self-Radicalization
The case underscores the threats posed by individuals who self-radicalize through online extremist ideologies. Special Agent James C. Barnacle, Jr. of the FBI noted the importance of community involvement in identifying concerning behavior.
Legal Implications for the Suspect
Sturdivant remains in federal custody, facing a maximum sentence of 20 years if convicted. U.S. Attorney Ferguson emphasized the seriousness of the threat and the law enforcement’s commitment to public safety.
Community Awareness and Reporting
The case serves as a cautionary tale for communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. The collaboration between local and federal law enforcement is crucial for ensuring safety against emerging threats.
