Downtowners Triumph in First Mummers Fancy Brigade Finale Since 2002

On January 1, hundreds gathered in downtown Philadelphia to celebrate the Mummers Parade, a cherished local tradition. The event culminated in the highly anticipated Fancy Brigade Finale at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. This year, the Downtowners triumphed with their jungle-themed performance, marking their first victory since 2002.

Mummers Parade Highlights

The Mummers Parade showcased a vibrant mix of creativity and performance art. Ten competing clubs brought themes from various cultures to life, captivating the audience. Anna Scafidi from Blackwood, New Jersey, shared her enthusiasm: “This is Philly. Mums, feathers and glitter and sequins.”

Notable Performances

  • Downtowners: Jungle theme; First-place winner since 2002.
  • The Jokers: Celebrated Brazilian culture with a lively performance.
  • The Satin Slipper: Transported viewers to Egypt with a spectacular show.

Each performance was meticulously planned, with a significant amount of preparation preceding the event. Anthony Stagliano Jr., business agent for the Fancy Brigade Association, stated, “It’s a one-day event, but it’s 364 days of planning.”

Young Talent on Stage

The parade also showcased young rising stars. Seven-year-old Lucianna danced with the Spartans for the first time. She expressed her joy, saying, “It was really fun because I get to see the people and see my family.”

Community Pride

Many spectators voiced their pride in the Mummers tradition. Val Thomas mentioned, “It’s a South Philly thing and we love the mummers.” Meanwhile, Tykeer from South Philadelphia expressed hope to join in one day, highlighting the familial and cultural significance of the event.

Looking Ahead

The Mummers Parade is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. Stagliano emphasized the importance of community support for the event’s future: “We want to do it for another 125 years, but without them we can’t.” Following the celebration, the teams will prepare for their next competition in 2027 while dismantling their floats.
