Maduro Invites U.S. Dialogue on Venezuela Drug Trafficking

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro recently expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue with the United States regarding critical issues such as drug trafficking, oil, and migration. This announcement comes in the wake of increasing pressure against his administration.
Potential Dialogue on Drug Trafficking
In an interview with state television, Maduro emphasized his readiness for discussions “wherever they want and whenever they want.” His call for dialogue on drug trafficking aligns with ongoing tensions between the two nations.
Recent U.S. Military Actions
For the past three months, U.S. forces have intensified operations against vessels suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific. The U.S. has conducted over 30 strikes against these vessels. This is part of the Trump administration’s “war on drugs,” which has reportedly resulted in more than 110 fatalities since September 2, when their first attack occurred in international waters.
- More than 30 military strikes conducted.
- 110 reported deaths linked to these operations.
- Latest incidents involved two boats allegedly carrying drugs, leading to the deaths of five individuals.
Claims of CIA Involvement
On Monday, President Trump reported a U.S. strike on a dock area associated with Venezuelan drug boats that caused a significant explosion. Sources indicate that a drone strike, reportedly overseen by the CIA, facilitated this explosion, marking a potentially unprecedented U.S. operation within Venezuela.
When questioned about this attack, Maduro refrained from confirming details, stating that discussion on the matter could occur in the coming days.
Broader Issues: Oil and Migration
Beyond drug trafficking, Maduro also opened the door for conversations surrounding oil and migration. He faces accusations from Trump, alleging that Maduro has been emptying prisons and forcing inmates to migrate to the U.S.
The U.S. has been actively seizing oil tankers involved in transporting sanctioned oil between Venezuela and Iran. Notably, one oil tanker was intercepted on December 10, prompting allegations of “international piracy” from the Venezuelan government. Since that incident, the U.S. has taken custody of another tanker and is pursuing a third.
Legal Perspectives
Legal experts have raised concerns regarding the U.S. operations against the alleged drug traffickers. While the U.S. Southern Command asserts that intelligence confirms the targeted vessels were engaged in narcotics trafficking, no evidence has been publicly provided to support these claims.
The situation continues to develop as both nations navigate complex geopolitical tensions over drug trafficking, oil, and migration issues.
