Trump Halts Push for National Guard Deployment in Chicago, Other Cities

President Donald Trump has decided to suspend efforts to deploy National Guard troops in cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland, Oregon. This decision arises after facing significant legal challenges regarding the deployment. He announced this move through a social media post, stating the possibility of revisiting the deployment in the future if crime rates increase.

Details of National Guard Deployment Suspension

The deployment originally aimed to address rising crime and immigration issues. Earlier this year, some National Guard troops were sent to Los Angeles, but they have since been withdrawn. Additionally, troops intended for Chicago and Portland remained off the streets due to ongoing legal disputes.

Legal Challenges Faced

Trump’s initiative to deploy troops in predominantly Democrat-led cities has encountered various legal obstacles:

  • The Supreme Court denied the administration’s request to deploy National Guard troops in the Chicago area in December.
  • In Washington, D.C., Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed a lawsuit to prevent over 2,000 guardsmen from being deployed.
  • A federal judge issued a permanent injunction against troop deployment in Oregon.
  • California National Guard troops were removed from Los Angeles streets following a court ruling by mid-December.

While an appeals court paused a part of the decision regarding troop control, the Trump administration announced it would not pursue a delay in the ruling that allows California to regain control over its National Guard units. This means the California National Guard can fully return to state control after being federalized in June.

The legal landscape surrounding this initiative illustrates the complexities and challenges of deploying National Guard troops in urban areas. Trump’s administration may revisit the deployment strategy should crime rates rise significantly.
