Boeing’s $2B B-52 Engine Program Includes Port San Antonio Work Site

Port San Antonio has been selected as a key site for Boeing Defense Systems’ significant investment in the B-52 Commercial Engine Replacement Program, valued at $2.04 billion. This initiative was announced by the U.S. Department of Defense and aims to modernize the B-52 bomber, which is the oldest type of bomber aircraft currently in operation.
B-52 Program Details
The contract entails extensive work on two B-52 aircraft, which will include system integration, modification, and testing of new engines and associated subsystems. The contract is designed to extend the aircraft’s operational life through at least 2033.
Key Locations Involved
Efforts related to the B-52 program will not be limited to San Antonio. Other work sites include:
- Oklahoma City
- Seattle
- Indianapolis
Completion is anticipated by May 31, 2033, and Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma is overseeing the contract execution.
Modernization Efforts
Boeing has recently completed ground integration and initial system checks for a new radar system at Port San Antonio. This radar system upgrade is part of broader modernization initiatives aimed at maintaining the B-52 in operational service until 2050 and beyond.
Funding and Support
The funding for this program will be incremental, utilizing nearly $35.8 million from the fiscal 2026 budget allocated for research, development, test, and evaluation activities.
As the program progresses, further information from Port San Antonio will be sought to provide updates on their specific operations and contributions to this landmark project.
