Paul Mills Provides Health Update Following Cardiac Scare Before Wichita State Game

Wichita State head coach Paul Mills recently provided an important health update following a cardiac scare he experienced. This disclosure came after deliberation about sharing his health journey with the public, as he felt it was essential to promote health awareness.
Sharing His Experience
On December 30, 2025, Mills talked with local media ahead of WSU’s American Conference opener against UAB. He emphasized that his decision to come forward about his health was to ensure accurate information was shared. “I wanted to provide clarity and prevent any misinformation,” he stated.
Encouraged by Baylor coach Scott Drew, Mills shared his experience to help others take their health seriously, which has resonated strongly with many. Since going public, he received numerous messages from fans, other coaches, and even strangers, many of whom scheduled their physicals after hearing his story.
Health Procedure Details
Mills underwent a minimally invasive procedure, where doctors inserted a wire through his wrist to place two stents. He described the relief he felt post-surgery as if a heavy weight had been lifted from his chest. “I feel great,” he remarked.
It is important to note that Mills clarified his condition was not due to heart disease but rather a manageable issue. He also highlighted the role of cholesterol in his health scare, stating that he had underestimated its hereditary impact. “Cholesterol is 80% hereditary,” Mills explained, urging others to remain vigilant about their health.
Encouraging Preventive Health Measures
Mills hopes to inspire others to prioritize preventive measures in their health routines. “There are many situations that can be avoided with proper awareness and regular check-ups,” he said. He reflected on the need for regular physicals, a practice he admits he had neglected.
He compared his experience to LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey, who underwent a similar procedure earlier in 2023 and returned to coaching without restrictions.
Looking Ahead
As preparations continue for the upcoming games, Mills aims to lead WSU to its first conference-opening win since the 2020-21 season. The Shockers have struggled with slow starts in conference play over the last four seasons, a trend Mills is eager to change. “We need to demonstrate that we can win on the road immediately,” he stated.
- Upcoming games include matches against UAB (9-4) and Charlotte (6-7).
- The team’s performance in early conference games will be crucial for building momentum.
Mills remains optimistic about both his health and his team’s prospects this season, looking forward to achieving their goals on the court while encouraging a healthier lifestyle off it.
