10-Year-Old with Rare Heart Defect Receives Rose Bowl Tickets to Support IU Football

A 10-year-old super fan of Indiana football, Drew Shouse, recently received a special surprise. He has been gifted tickets for the Rose Bowl, where the Indiana Hoosiers will compete against Alabama. This gesture was arranged by Team IMPACT, a nonprofit organization that connects children with serious illnesses to college athletic teams.
Drew’s Health Journey
Drew was born with two significant heart defects: mitral valve regurgitation and aortic stenosis. This rare condition occurs in about six of every 1,000 newborns, according to University of Michigan Health. He has undergone three open-heart surgeries throughout his young life.
- First open-heart surgery during infancy
- Third surgery occurred in October 2017
- Currently stable, with yearly cardiology check-ups
A Lifelong Fan
Drew’s passion for Indiana University football blossomed in the hospital. His mother, Ashleigh Shouse, gifted him an IU onesie when he was a newborn. His affinity for the Hoosiers continued to grow as he collected team memorabilia and eagerly awaited trips to Bloomington, Indiana.
In August 2023, Drew chose to partner with the Indiana football team through Team IMPACT. He has since taken on the role of “kickoff kid,” making him a notable presence at games.
Memorable Experiences
Drew’s connection with the football team has led to meaningful moments:
- Meeting linebacker Isaiah Jones, who introduced him to the team’s training facility
- Receiving a shopping spree with wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr.
- Getting fist bumps from players before games, strengthening his resolve
These interactions not only boost Drew’s confidence but also provide him with inspiration in overcoming his health challenges.
Rose Bowl Surprise
Initially, only Drew and his father, Alex, were slated to attend the Rose Bowl. However, Drew expressed sadness about his older brother Jack missing the event. Team IMPACT ensured that Jack received a ticket, and the family worked together to fund his travel. This initiative brought immense joy to the boys, who celebrated with excitement.
As Drew prepared for the Rose Bowl, he reflected on a message he wanted to share with his favorite team. He hoped they would “play good, play strong, and play hard,” ending with an enthusiastic “Go Hoosiers!”
A Bright Future
Despite his medical hurdles, Drew is focused on a hopeful future. He dreams of possibly helping other children like him one day. His journey has also made a significant impact on those around him, inspiring players and fans alike.
“Drew is an inspiration to all of us on the team,” said IU quarterback Tyler Cherry. “He’s a fighter, and seeing him battle motivates us every day.”
As Drew embarks on this exciting adventure at the Rose Bowl, he serves as a testament to resilience and the power of community support.
