Suncoast Opens Cold-Weather Shelters Amid Temperature Drop

As the Suncoast braces for a significant drop in temperatures, several cold-weather shelters are set to open to assist those in need. Temperatures are anticipated to dip into the low 40s on Tuesday night and possibly fall to the low 30s in certain areas on Wednesday night. Here’s a detailed overview of the shelters launching across the region.

Manatee County Cold-Weather Shelter

The Salvation Army of Manatee County will offer a free shelter on the nights of December 30 and December 31. This service will be available at their facility located at 1204 14th Street West, Bradenton.

  • Capacity: 53 people in the men’s shelter and 25 in the family shelter.
  • Shuttle service will start at 3:30 p.m., operating from several pick-up points including Turning Points and the Palmetto Police Department.

Sarasota County Cold-Weather Shelter

In Sarasota County, the Salvation Army will also provide free shelter on the same dates, December 30 and 31. The shelter is located at 1400 10th St., Sarasota.

  • A meal, along with blankets, will be distributed on December 30 starting at 6 p.m. at 100 Church, located at 14525 Tamiami Trail, North Port.
  • The Breeze Route 9 bus will maintain a normal schedule and stop approximately one block from 100 Church.
  • Residents in the North Port area have access to Breeze OnDemand for transportation services. Further information can be found at El-Balad’s website.

Charlotte County Cold-Weather Shelter

The Charlotte CARE Center, previously known as the Charlotte County Homeless Coalition, will extend its services to shelter those seeking refuge from the cold on December 30 and 31. This facility is located at 1476 Kenesaw St., Port Charlotte.

  • Guests must pre-register by calling 941-627-4313.
  • Arrival time for all guests is required by 8 p.m.
