The FBI has apprehended a Louisiana man with suspected connections to a far-left extremist group. This group is allegedly linked to a planned terrorist attack in Southern California.

Arrest of a Louisiana Man

Micah James Legnon, a 29-year-old former Marine and police officer, was taken into custody in New Iberia, Louisiana. This town is located approximately two hours from New Orleans.

Connections to an Extremist Group

Legnon is believed to have ties to the Turtle Island Liberation Front. This group advocates for “liberation through decolonization tribal sovereignty.” According to court documents, they have been described as anti-government, pro-Palestine, and anti-capitalist.

Details of the Alleged Plot

The FBI’s investigation links Legnon to a planned New Year’s Eve attack in Southern California. Members of this group reportedly devised a scheme involving bombings targeting multiple businesses. The plan entailed using backpacks filled with complex pipe bombs to detonate simultaneously at midnight.

Legal Charges and Evidence

  • Legnon faces charges for making threats over interstate commerce.
  • He allegedly shared an image suggesting plans to travel to New Orleans to attack Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
  • Law enforcement discovered sniper training manuals, assault rifles, and ammunition during a search of his residence.

FBI Surveillance of Legnon

Prior to his arrest, Legnon was under FBI surveillance due to his associations with those arrested in California. Agents observed him loading an assault rifle and body armor into his vehicle.

Understanding the Threat

Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli clarified that while Legnon was not directly involved in the California plot, his membership in the Turtle Island Liberation Front posed a significant threat. He threatened law enforcement agents during the investigation.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding domestic extremism and the potential for violence across the United States. Continued vigilance and law enforcement actions remain crucial in addressing these threats.
