Universal Studios Approved for Construction in Bedfordshire

Universal Studios has received approval for a major construction project in Bedfordshire, which promises to bring significant economic benefits to the region. The site, once a brickworks, was selected for its advantageous transport connections, including proximity to rail services and London Luton Airport.
Key Features of the Universal Studios Project
Plans for the new development include structures reaching up to 377 feet (115 meters), positioning them as the tallest rides in Europe. Universal Studios envisions a vibrant complex that will feature:
- A theme park with several themed lands
- Visitor accommodations
- Retail and dining options
- Entertainment facilities
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The project is expected to create approximately 28,000 jobs, with around 80% of the workforce anticipated to come from local areas, including Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Luton, and Milton Keynes. Adam Zerny, the Independent leader of Central Bedfordshire Council, stated that the project would generate “significant benefits to our area,” enhancing income for various local businesses.
Transportation Upgrades
The development will also facilitate essential transportation improvements. Universal Studios has committed to delivering several long-awaited upgrades, including:
- Expansion of Wixams railway station
- Direct slip roads from the A421
- Various local road enhancements
In August 2024, work commenced on a new Wixams railway station, which was paused to accommodate the construction of a larger station specifically designed for the Universal project. Recently, the East West Rail Company announced plans for an additional railway station to serve the park in Stewartby.
Infrastructure Developments
National Highways has confirmed that upgrades to the transport network will include a new link road off the A421. Adam Zerny expressed optimism following meetings with Universal Studios, noting that there is recognition of the need for improvements to local road infrastructure.
