Xcel to Cut Power for Front Range Communities Wednesday Noon Amid High Winds

Severe weather alerts are in place for the Front Range as high winds and critically dry conditions heighten the risk for wildfires. Due to these weather factors, Xcel Energy has announced plans to implement a Public Safety Power Shutoff starting on December 17 at noon.

Record-Breaking Warmth and Wind Alerts

Recent weeks have seen an unusual lack of moisture along the Front Range, raising wildfire concerns among officials. On December 15, Denver recorded a temperature of 68 degrees, tying a heat record that stood for over 100 years. This marked the seventh consecutive day of temperatures above 60 degrees.

Conditions Increasing Wildfire Risk

  • Wind gusts are forecasted to reach up to 75 mph.
  • Counties have expanded fire bans in anticipation of dangerous fire conditions.
  • Xcel Energy will proactively shut off power to reduce wildfire risks.

Andrew Holder, Xcel’s Director of Community Relations, stated that the company does not take the decision to shut off power lightly. This proactive measure could affect numerous communities along the I-25 corridor from Wyoming to Colorado Springs.

Community Impact and Communication

This will be the second time Xcel has preemptively de-energized power lines due to wildfire threats. In April 2024, over 55,000 customers lost power, revealing the importance of effective communication with affected communities. Xcel is committed to updating customers as conditions evolve.

Potential Outage Details

The exact areas impacted and duration of potential outages remain uncertain. Holder emphasized that restoration efforts would begin only after wind conditions improve and safety assessments are complete.

Weather Outlook

The National Weather Service has indicated that dry conditions persisting across the region might improve with an incoming cold front expected on Thursday. This front could bring snow to higher elevations, helping to mitigate fire risks.

Preparing for Expected Power Outages

Residents are advised to prepare for possible power outages by taking the following steps:

  • Charge electronic devices and portable chargers.
  • Prepare medical devices in advance.
  • Keep backup light sources and first aid kits ready.
  • Set refrigerators and freezers to their coldest settings.
  • Unplug sensitive appliances before power restoration to prevent surge damage.
  • Practice opening your garage manually for emergency exit.

As conditions continue to evolve, residents are urged to stay informed and remain vigilant amid the heightened wildfire risks facing the Front Range community.
