‘Anaconda’ Director Unveils New Comedy Footage, Hints at Franchise Future

Director Tom Gormican recently showcased new comedy footage from the upcoming film titled “Anaconda” at the CCXP event in São Paulo. Alongside cast member Selton Mello, Gormican presented four clips highlighting the unique approach of this reimagining of the beloved 1997 horror film.

Anaconda: A Fresh Take on a Classic

This Sony production is set to hit theaters on December 25 and features a cast that includes Paul Rudd, Jack Black, Steve Zahn, Thandiwe Newton, and Daniela Melchior. Both Gormican and Mello clarified that this project is not a direct remake or reboot of the original film, which starred Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, Ice Cube, and Jon Voight. Instead, it tells a new story centered around a group of friends passionate about the original “Anaconda.”

Plot Overview

  • The film revolves around friends aiming to create their own version of a 90s survival movie.
  • Lead characters include Griff (Rudd) and Doug (Black), who are unsuccessful filmmakers.
  • The project celebrates the original film while introducing entirely new concepts.

Gormican described the film as a “big adventure comedy” that is expected to take unpredictable turns. The humor is evident in scenes showcased at the event, including a comedic exchange where characters decide to include a “double head-butt” in their script.

Character Insights and Clips

One of the clips introduced Mello’s character, a Brazilian snake handler, who recounts a humorous anecdote about an anaconda that killed his grandmother. This blend of comedy and adventure aims to connect with both fans of the original film and new audiences.

While not all cast members were present at CCXP, Rudd and Black appeared via pre-recorded messages. Rudd congratulated Mello on receiving the honoree award for contributions to Brazilian culture and jokingly expressed a desire to stay at Mello’s home if he visits Brazil.

Franchise Potential

During the event, Gormican hinted at the possibility of future installments in the “Anaconda” franchise. He noted that the story does not necessarily have to be self-contained, depending on its reception after the Christmas release. His remarks indicate that if the film is well-received, audiences can expect more adventures involving the beloved giant snake.
