Major Subway and GO Transit Closures Hit GTA This Weekend

This weekend brings significant transit challenges for riders in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Major subway closures on the TTC are scheduled, along with disruptions on the GO Transit service.

Major Subway Closures in the GTA

Starting at midnight Friday, extensive subway closures will take effect. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will suspend service on the “U” portion of Line 1 between Osgoode and College stations. This includes Union Station, with King and Queen stations also closed.

  • No subway service on Line 1 from Osgoode to College stations.
  • King and Queen stations will be inaccessible.
  • The closures are scheduled to last until the regular service resumes for Monday’s morning commute.

This disruption is particularly impactful as it falls during a busy Christmas shopping weekend, significantly affecting access to the Eaton Centre.

Line 2 Closure Details

In addition to Line 1, there will be no service on Line 2 between Ossington Station and St. George Station. The TTC states that this closure is necessary to facilitate essential track maintenance.

Alternate Transportation Options

To assist affected riders, shuttle buses will operate in place of regular subway services. It’s advisable for transit users to plan their journeys accordingly.

GO Transit Service Changes

  • GO buses will substitute for train service along the Lakeshore West line.
  • Key stops include West Harbour, Aldershot, Burlington, Oakville, and Clarkson GO stations.
  • No service at Appleby, Bronte, Port Credit, Long Branch, Mimico, or Exhibition GO stations.

Metrolinx has announced additional GO bus services between West Harbour and Aldershot GO to Bramalea GO. Here, passengers can connect to eastbound Kitchener line trains heading towards Union Station.

Late-Night Service Adjustments

Riders should also note some adjustments to late-night services on Friday. It’s highly recommended to check current schedules and plan travel routes in advance to avoid delays.

Transit users are encouraged to stay informed to navigate this busy weekend effectively, considering the major subway and GO Transit closures impacting the area.
