Emergency Declared in Cartagena Bay: Key Details Unveiled

Cartagena Bay has been declared in a state of emergency due to significant issues in the Canal del Dique affecting local port activities. This declaration was made by the Cartagena City Hall on December 11. An atypical breach in the canal has led to irregular water diversion, which is carrying sediments that threaten the port’s depth and the safety of vessels.

Emergency Declaration in Cartagena Bay

Mayor Dumek Turbay Paz and Bolívar Governor Yamil Arana have urgently called on the National Government to intervene in this environmental emergency. They note the urgent actions are necessary due to the severe economic and social consequences stemming from the situation.

Impact on Local Port Operations

Authorities attribute the current crisis to complications related to the Canal del Dique mega project. During a recent site visit, accompanied by port business leaders and environmental officials, it was confirmed that sedimentation levels have increased dramatically.

  • The accumulation of sand, mud, and other materials is decreasing the required water depth for safe vessel operations.
  • Current conditions have already impaired 30% of the infrastructure at the Bavaria Port.
  • The National Armada’s navigation is also compromised due to the diverted water flow.

Mayor Turbay expressed concern over the impact of this sediment buildup, stating, “This material accumulation reduces the depth necessary for vessels to enter, maneuver, and operate safely.” He highlighted that the emergency could have been alleviated with timely intervention.

Consequences of the Ongoing Crisis

The city’s administration has identified several consequences due to ineffective governmental action:

  • Abrupt loss of navigational depth in the bay.
  • Uncontrolled sediment accumulation.
  • Direct impact on vessel navigation and anchoring.
  • Actual damage to critical infrastructure of the Bavaria Port.

Mayor Dumek Turbay stated, “Cartagena’s water and port activities are vital for competitiveness. What is happening in Bavaria is the first visible impact of an issue we predicted long ago.”

Collaborative Response Efforts

The Cartagena City Hall is actively collaborating with DIMAR, Cardique, the Tourism Secretary, the Bavaria Port Society, the Cartagena Port Society, and the National Police. Their goal is to assess damages, evaluate risks, and develop immediate measures to ensure maritime safety and operational capability.

Both the city governance and Bolívar authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to protect the bay and the economic future of thousands of families who depend on port activities.
