Marvel at Marseille’s Tidal Gauge History Unfold in New Graphic Novel

Marseille’s tidal gauge, a historical marvel, has been transformed into a graphic novel. This unique structure was established in 1884 to determine altitude references in continental France. Over nearly 150 years, it has served as both a measuring device for sea levels and a pivotal point for calculating elevation across the country.

Historical Significance of Marseille’s Tidal Gauge

The tidal gauge is situated along the Marseille coastline. It provides crucial measurements related to sea levels and the country’s sea level zero benchmark. As a remarkable monument, it stands out in the world for its contribution to geodesy.

The Graphic Novel

Illustrated by Clément Baloup, the new graphic novel chronicles the tidal gauge’s journey from its establishment in the late 19th century to its revival in the early 2000s. The project was supported by the Friends of the Tidal Gauge Association, highlighting the importance of preserving such historical sites.
