Winter Weather Alert: Lower Michigan Braces for Up to 7 Inches of Snow

A significant winter storm is set to impact Lower Michigan as an Alberta Clipper moves into the region. Residents can expect up to seven inches of snow from tonight through Wednesday afternoon.

Winter Weather Alert: Lower Michigan Prepares for Heavy Snow

A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect for several counties across Lower Michigan. This advisory will be active from 10 p.m. today until 4 p.m. Wednesday. The areas most likely to experience heavy snow accumulation include:

  • Traverse City
  • Oscoda
  • Central Lower Michigan
  • Big Rapids
  • Saginaw
  • The Thumb region

Snow Accumulation Projections

Forecasts indicate that regions from Traverse City to Houghton Lake could receive between four to seven inches of snow. By noon on Wednesday, these areas will likely meet the criteria for the winter weather advisory. Here’s a breakdown of expected snowfall:

  • 5-7 inches: Traverse City, Cadillac, Houghton Lake, Clare, Midland, Bay City, Tawas City
  • 3-5 inches: Ludington, Big Rapids, Saginaw area, and the Thumb region

Southern regions will experience a more complex weather pattern. A heavy snow burst is forecasted overnight with three to four inches anticipated before transitioning to rain. As temperatures rise, especially around 35 degrees at daybreak, this could result in wet roads for commuters.

Timing of the Storm

Snowfall will occur in two main phases. The first phase, from midnight to 4 a.m., will bring heavier snow across much of Lower Michigan. The precipitation will remain snow from Bay City to Midland before mixing with rain in the Grand Rapids area between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. Wednesday.

By Wednesday afternoon, the widespread snowfall is expected to taper off to lighter, spotty lake-effect snow. This should provide clearer conditions for travel later in the day.

Weather Variability and Safety Precautions

While this storm is not described as a historical event, it will undoubtedly bring solid snowfall. Residents should remain cautious, especially as the winter weather advisory may be adjusted based on changing conditions.

For ongoing updates and the latest forecasts, residents are encouraged to check El-Balad or other local weather resources. Stay safe on the roads and plan your travel accordingly.
