Sasha DiGiulian Conquers El Cap’s Longest Free Route Despite Snowstorm and Injuries

Sasha DiGiulian achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the first woman to complete a major free climb on El Capitan’s longest route, known as Platinum Wall. This significant accomplishment took place amid challenging conditions, including a snowstorm and injuries, which tested her mental and physical endurance.
Climbing Platinum Wall
DiGiulian’s journey began 11 days before her historic ascent. She was camped in a portaledge, 2,600 feet above the ground, while facing a storm. The weather forecast predicted continued rain and wind, forcing her to decide between retreating or committing to the climb. With limited food supplies, she chose to stay put and wait for a resupply.
The Route Challenge
Platinum Wall, also referred to as The Direct Line, stretches across 39 pitches and includes numerous challenging sections. The total length of the route sums up to 4,470 feet, making it the longest free route on El Capitan. DiGiulian concentrated on three crux pitches, each featuring technical difficulties:
- White Wizard (Pitch 18): A 195-foot section with difficult holds.
- Doghead (Pitch 27): A highly exposed traverse requiring precision footwork.
- Pitch 34: Known as the most challenging pitch, demanding a blend of strength and technique.
Recovery and Preparation
Despite her rich experience, DiGiulian faced setbacks, including injuries and challenging weather conditions. She trained rigorously, practicing on various routes to prepare for the ascent. By Spring 2025, she felt ready to tackle Platinum Wall.
Ascent Amid the Storm
November 14 marked the 11th day of her climb when she and her partner, Elliot Faber, were trapped by rain and snow. With only a few pitches remaining, they opted to remain on the wall and await resupplies from friends below. As conditions worsened, the climbs became even more daunting.
Breakthrough and Triumph
After a prolonged wait, DiGiulian finally tackled the crux pitches. She innovated her technique on the White Wizard and pushed through physical limitations. Upon successfully completing the final crux, DiGiulian felt an overwhelming rush of emotion. The subsequent climbs to the summit, including one last challenging section, were accomplished despite the difficult weather.
A Historic Achievement
On November 17, 2025, Sasha DiGiulian stepped onto solid ground after 23 days on El Capitan, marking not only the first female ascent of Platinum Wall but also the fourth overall. This achievement solidified her status as a leading figure in the climbing community.
Life After the Climb
Returning to Boulder, Colorado, DiGiulian reflected on her journey. She plans to take time to process the experience while preparing to launch a new protein bar with her company. DiGiulian’s remarkable story of resilience and commitment serves as inspiration for climbers everywhere.
