Wehrlein Claims São Paulo Pole, Faces Three-Place Penalty

Pascal Wehrlein achieved the fastest lap during the Final Duel of the 2025 Google Cloud São Paulo E-Prix, yet he will start the race from fourth position due to a three-place grid penalty. This penalty resulted from wheelspin as he departed the pit lane, which violates the Sporting Rules for Season 12.

Race Day Details

The São Paulo E-Prix is set to begin at 14:00 local time. Despite his penalty, Wehrlein’s strong performance secured him the Julius Baer Pole Position award, marking his third consecutive pole in São Paulo and the tenth for the Porsche team, although he will not be starting from that position.

Grid Lineup

  • 1st: Jake Dennis (Andretti)
  • 2nd: Dan Ticktum
  • 3rd: Edoardo Mortara
  • 4th: Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche)
  • 5th: Nyck de Vries (Mahindra Racing)
  • 6th: Antonio Felix da Costa (Jaguar TCS Racing)

Wehrlein’s penalty might surprisingly work to his advantage. Historically, no driver has won the São Paulo E-Prix from the front row. Dennis will hope to change that statistic as he secures the pole position.

Qualifying Session Highlights

The qualifying rounds showcased intense competition. Wehrlein defeated Ticktum in the semifinals with a decisive lap time of 1m9.812s. He had previously outperformed Nyck de Vries in the quarters to secure his place.

  • Quarter-Finals Highlights:
    • Edoardo Mortara defeated Jean-Eric Vergne.
    • Jake Dennis edged past Antonio Felix da Costa.
    • Pascal Wehrlein overcame Nyck de Vries.
    • Dan Ticktum eliminated Norman Nato.

Group sessions before the quarter-finals were marked by challenges as drivers jostled for positioning. Felipe Drugovich, a local favorite, initially performed well but suffered an accident, bringing out the first red flag of the event.

Future Outlook

As the season progresses, Wehrlein remains a strong contender for the Drivers’ World Championship, currently in the lead. Following the São Paulo E-Prix, the focus will shift to upcoming races in the 2025/26 Formula E season.
