Chicago Weather: More Snow Monday; O’Hare, Midway Recover from Flight Cancellations

Chicago is preparing for another round of winter weather on Monday, following a significant winter storm that affected the area over the weekend. As residents work to clear away the snow, fog and black ice may pose challenges for commuters early in the morning.
Snow Forecast for Monday
According to El-Balad’s meteorological forecasts, light snow is expected to begin falling in the Chicago area by early Monday afternoon. Additional snowfall totals of one to two inches are anticipated, with some regions, particularly to the south and west, possibly receiving up to three inches.
Winter Weather Advisory Issued
A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from 2 p.m. until midnight, signaling that residents should prepare for more winter conditions as they navigate the day.
Recent Snowfall Records
The snowfall this past weekend was unprecedented, with O’Hare Airport recording 8.4 inches on Saturday alone. This marked the snowiest November day in Chicago’s recorded history, according to the National Weather Service.
Airport Recovery Efforts
Both O’Hare and Midway airports are working to recover from significant travel disruptions. Over the weekend, more than 1,300 flight cancellations were reported at these airports.
Current Status at O’Hare and Midway
- As of Monday morning, O’Hare experienced 50 flight cancellations.
- Midway airport had no cancellations reported.
The Federal Aviation Administration noted that on Sunday, average departure delays for O’Hare flights reached nearly one hour, while departures from the airport were delayed by approximately 15 minutes. Travelers reported frustrations, with some experiencing long waits on the tarmac only to be told their flights were canceled.

Frustrated passengers shared their experiences, highlighting the chaotic nature of travel during the storm. One traveler, Fran Reynolds, recounted being stuck on a runway for over an hour due to cancellations.
