Human Rights Group Secures Release of Ten LGBTI Youth Arrested in Cameroon

On November 23, a troubling incident took place in Bafoussam, Cameroon. Ten young members of the LGBTI community were arrested after leaving a friend’s birthday party. Reports indicate that the arrests were executed by unknown individuals described as “men in uniform.”

The arrests appeared to be motivated by the youths’ clothing and appearance. Following their detention, the captors demanded money in exchange for the individuals’ release. Concerned for their safety, those detained reached out to Transamical, a local human rights advocacy organization focused on LGBTI rights.

Arrest and Intervention

The call for assistance to Transamical occurred around 1 a.m. The organization quickly began negotiations to secure the youths’ freedom. After considerable discussions, the group was released following the payment of 50,000 FCFA, approximately $88.
