Understanding Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition where the pancreas fails to produce insulin. This results in unregulated blood sugar levels, which can complicate physically demanding careers, such as dance.
Challenges Faced by Dancers
For dancers like Kuzmin, exercise can lead to drops in blood sugar levels, making it crucial to monitor these levels closely. Nikita utilizes a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensor, which is often visible while he performs on stage.
Empowering Others
Speaking in an interview with The Independent alongside his dance partner, Amber Davies, Kuzmin referred to diabetes as a “superpower.” He emphasized that it fosters qualities like resilience, awareness, and planning from an early age.
