Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Snow in Parts of Hawaii

Hawaii, renowned for its tropical climate, is currently facing a winter weather advisory with snow expected on its volcanic summits. The National Weather Service has issued this advisory for the high peaks of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on the Big Island, where snowfall is anticipated amid warmer conditions in lower regions. While Honolulu is forecasted to reach a pleasant 82 degrees, conditions at higher elevations contrast sharply.

Snowfall Expectations in Hawaii

The winter weather advisory is in effect as of November 19, 2023. According to meteorologists, snow accumulations between one to two inches may occur on the Big Island’s summits. Deep moisture is forecasted to bring a combination of rain and snow showers, especially as temperatures dip near freezing overnight.

Historical Context of Snow in Hawaii

  • Snow can occur at Hawaii’s mountain peaks five to eight times each year.
  • Mauna Kea translates to “white mountain,” signifying its snow-covered top.
  • Most snowfall typically happens from October through April, known as the wet season.
  • The coldest temperature recorded in Hawaii was 12 degrees Fahrenheit on Mauna Kea in 1979.
  • Haleakalā volcano in Maui experiences snow roughly once every five years.

Travel Advisory and Projections

Travelers are warned to prepare for slippery road conditions due to the winter weather advisory. The hazardous conditions may lead to limited visibility and difficulties in driving. The advisory could extend through November 20, as significant moisture patterns linger over the area.

Beyond the Big Island, the rest of Hawaii is expected to experience moderate to heavy rain, particularly affecting windward and inland regions of Maui and the Big Island. These conditions are predicted to spread to other islands later in the day, with showers and breezy winds continuing into Thursday.

Residents and visitors should remain vigilant and exercise caution as Hawaii’s unpredictable winter weather approaches.
