Church Lowers Women’s Missionary Age Requirement to 18

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has updated its policies regarding the age at which young women can serve as missionaries. Effective immediately, women are now eligible to begin their full-time missionary service at age 18, following their high school graduation.
Details of the Age Requirement Change
This significant announcement was made on November 21, 2025, by the Church’s First Presidency. The updated policy encourages young women who wish to serve a mission to do so at the age of 18. This decision follows recommendations based on feedback from current sister missionaries and other Church members.
Historical Context of Missionary Ages
The last change to missionary age requirements occurred in October 2012. At that time, the minimum age for young men was set at 18, while women had to be 19. The previous stipulation was a shift from ages 19 for men and 21 for women, allowing for a more inclusive missionary experience.

Missionary Service and Responsibilities
Unlike young men, whose missionary service is a priesthood responsibility, the Church emphasizes that missionary work remains optional for women. The leadership encourages young women to seek personal revelation regarding their decisions to serve.
In a statement, Church officials reaffirmed their support for the youth, commending their commitment and encouraging prayerful consideration of mission service. The late President Russell M. Nelson highlighted the importance of missionary service during his remarks in April 2022.
Impact on Missionary Numbers
While the Church does not anticipate a sudden surge in sister missionaries as a result of this age adjustment, the history of similar changes suggests a potential increase. Since 2012, over 80,000 missionaries have been actively serving worldwide.
The Church is further expanding its missionary footprint with plans to establish 55 new missions, effective July 1, 2026. This growth will bring the total number of missions to 506, marking a historic high for the Church.
Application Process for Prospective Missionaries
The process for applying to serve remains largely unchanged. Prospective missionaries may open the application portal up to 150 days before their desired service start date. This timeline provides flexibility for young women considering their missionary options.
