Hail and Lightning Strike Phoenix; First Alert Weather Day Extended

Phoenix has recently experienced severe weather, characterized by heavy rainfall and hail. A First Alert Weather Day has been extended through Thursday as concerns over flooding persist.
Current Weather Conditions in Phoenix
The West Valley faced significant impact from a series of thunderstorms on Wednesday. These storms moved from Avondale through Glendale to Peoria, triggering reports of hail covering streets.
Flood Watch and Rain Chances
- The flood watch for parts of the north Valley, including Scottsdale and Cave Creek, has been extended until 6 a.m.
- Rain chances have increased significantly, now sitting between 45% to 70% through early Thursday morning.
- This could lead to a wet commute for many Valley residents on Thursday morning.
Impact of Severe Weather
In the wake of the storm, Desert Sky Mall in west Phoenix suffered a partial roof collapse, resulting in evacuations. Additionally, delays were reported at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport due to severe weather conditions.
Power Outages
At the peak of the storm, over 6,600 customers of SRP lost electricity, mainly in Glendale and west Phoenix, while fewer than 450 APS customers were affected. As of 9 p.m., less than 800 customers remained without power.
Forecast and Future Conditions
The saturated ground from previous rains raises the risk of further flooding. Temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-60s for the next few days, with drier weather anticipated next week, ushering in highs in the 70s.
Future Storm Systems
Looking ahead, another Pacific weather system will hit the area Thursday night, bringing additional moisture. Rain chances in the Valley for Saturday and Sunday are forecasted at around 30%, though exact rainfall amounts are still uncertain.
Snow Levels in the High Country
- Snow levels are projected to drop to approximately 6,500 feet through Thursday.
- Areas like Flagstaff may receive another 1-2 inches of snow, while eastern Arizona could see heavier accumulations.
As weather conditions evolve, Phoenix residents are advised to stay informed and prepared for the potential impact of volatile weather. El-Balad will continue to provide updates on this developing situation.
