Man Charged After San Diego Migrant Boat Capsizes, Killing 4 Passengers

A man has been charged following a tragic incident involving a migrant boat that capsized near San Diego. The boat mishap resulted in the deaths of four passengers. David Alfonso Barrera Nunes, identified by authorities as the boat’s captain, faces serious charges from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Barrera Nunes has been charged with two federal offenses. These charges include bringing individuals into the country illegally for profit and causing a death in the process. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment or even the death penalty.

He was arrested on Saturday and is scheduled for a detention hearing this week before U.S. Magistrate Judge David Leshner in the Southern District of California.

Incident Details

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on a Friday night when U.S. Border Patrol agents were alerted to a small vessel crossing from Mexico. An hour later, the agents observed the boat capsizing amid six-foot waves off Imperial Beach, California, close to the U.S.-Mexico border.

  • Time of incident: 11:30 p.m. Friday
  • Location: Imperial Beach, California
  • Estimated number of passengers: 9
  • Fatalities: 4 passengers
  • Survivors: 5 (rescued/detained)

Survivors indicated that engine problems plagued the vessel and that heated discussions occurred between them and the captain, who was urged to turn back to Mexico. However, Barrera Nunes chose to proceed despite the vessel’s mechanical issues.

Survivor Accounts and Emergency Response

One survivor reported being trapped inside a cabin when the boat capsized. Another individual sustained severe injuries when a piece of metal pierced his leg during the incident. Barrera Nunes reportedly was among the first to reach the shore and neglected to assist other passengers.

In addition to Barrera Nunes, another individual, Luis Enrique Barreto Goitia, has also been charged for entering the U.S. illegally after a previous deportation.

Expert Insights on Maritime Risks

Captain Robert Tucker, commander of the San Diego Coast Guard sector, emphasized the high risks associated with migrant boats. He noted that the incident highlights the dangers posed to individuals attempting to enter the United States by sea using fragile and unstable vessels.

This incident is part of a worrying trend; previous instances of migrant boats capsizing in the same area have resulted in casualties. In May, another capsizing led to three deaths, including a young boy from India, highlighting the perilous nature of these crossings.

As investigations continue, authorities remain focused on the safety and legal implications surrounding migrant sea ventures.
