J.P. Estrella Exits Tennessee vs Rice Game with Left Leg Injury

J.P. Estrella exited the Tennessee basketball game against Rice on November 17 due to a left leg injury. This incident occurred just before halftime, when the Vols announced that he would not return to the game.
During the game, Estrella was involved in a rebounding effort when he fell backward after losing the ball. Rice forward Stephen Giwa landed on Estrella’s lower leg during the play. Following the injury, Estrella immediately clutched his left knee and appeared to be in significant pain at the free-throw line.
Treatment and Immediate Aftermath
Trainer Chad Newman quickly attended to Estrella on the court while teammates gathered around him. Guard Ethan Burg remained by his side as medical staff assessed the injury. Subsequently, Estrella was helped off the court by Newman and strength coach Garrett Medenwald. Although he struggled, he managed to put some weight on his left leg.
Estrella’s Season Performance
The 6-foot-11 forward from Maine has been a standout for the No. 17 Tennessee Volunteers, boasting impressive statistics so far this season. Before his injury against Rice, he averaged 17.3 points and 8.7 rebounds over three games.
- 4 points scored against Rice before the injury
- 23 points and 10 rebounds in a win against North Florida (November 12)
- 17 points and 11 rebounds vs. Northern Kentucky (November 8)
- 12 points and 5 rebounds against Mercer (November 3)
Injury History and Team Dynamics
Estrella’s injury history includes a challenging 2024-25 season, where he missed all but three games following season-ending foot surgery. He also faced an ankle issue during preseason training. Despite these setbacks, he made a strong start to his third season at Tennessee.
Currently, Tennessee’s frontcourt is a critical component of the team’s strategy, with Estrella leading a five-man rotation that includes senior Felix Okpara, juniors Jaylen Carey and Cade Phillips, and freshman DeWayne Brown II. Their combined efforts have bolstered the team’s performance early in the season.
