Hamilton Hammers Forge Steel City Identity with New AHL Franchise

The newly established American Hockey League (AHL) team in Hamilton is embracing the city’s rich steelworking heritage. Team owners Oak View Group (OVG) along with TD Coliseum and the New York Islanders announced the franchise will be named the Hamilton Hammers. The name honors Hamilton’s nickname, “The Hammer,” and reflects its industrial past.
Branding and Logo Reveal
The official unveiling of the Hammers’ name and logo took place during an event attended by Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horvath, AHL representatives, and officials from the Islanders and OVG. The logo features crossed hammers, a direct nod to Hamilton’s metalworking legacy. Additionally, the color scheme of orange and blue ties the team visually to the New York Islanders.
Team Details and Upcoming Season
The Hamilton Hammers will begin their inaugural season in the AHL’s North Division next year. Notably, this franchise marks the third AHL team to represent Hamilton. Previously, the city hosted:
- The Vancouver Canucks’ affiliate from 1992 to 1994.
- The Bulldogs, who played from 1996 to 2015, first as an Edmonton Oilers affiliate then as a Montreal Canadiens affiliate.
The franchise relocates from Bridgeport, Connecticut, with plans for its games to be held at the TD Coliseum. This arena recently underwent extensive renovations, amounting to $300 million. With an 18,000-seat capacity, it aims to provide a vibrant home for the Hammers and their fans.
The Hamilton Hammers are poised to establish themselves within the AHL and honor the city’s identity as a pivotal steel production center.
