Met Office Forecasts Snow Arrival in UK Amid Plummeting Temperatures

The Met Office has issued warnings for a significant drop in temperatures across the UK as November progresses. Following a notably mild start to the month, citizens should prepare for colder conditions and potential snowfall.
Expectations for Colder Weather
Initially, a surge of warm air from the south resulted in exceptionally warm weather. This phenomenon contributed to the mildest Bonfire Night on record, with temperatures only plummeting to 14.4°C in Teddington, London.
Rain and Weather Warnings
- Heavy rain is predicted from the morning of November 11.
- Yellow warnings are in effect for parts of Wales, southeast England, and southwestern Scotland.
As the disruptive wet and windy conditions ease, colder air will sweep in from the north, leading to freezing overnight temperatures in many areas.
Risk of Snow and Ice
By the evening of November 12, Scotland is expected to experience below-freezing conditions, increasing the likelihood of snowfall on higher ground. However, other regions such as England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are primarily forecasted to continue seeing rain instead of snow.
Neil Armstrong, the Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, commented on the situation, stating, “The UK is in for an unsettled week of weather, with frequent heavy rains and strong winds. Recent rainfall has left the ground saturated, raising the risk of flooding and challenging travel conditions.”
Forecast Beyond This Week
Looking ahead, the Met Office anticipates a general decline in temperatures throughout November. According to their long-range forecast covering November 14 to November 23, the initial phase will still be mild, but this will gradually shift.
- Expect heavy and prolonged rainfall as unsettled weather continues.
- A transition to colder, more showery conditions is anticipated.
- Wintry showers could occur over high ground, while overnight frost may impact many areas.
The specific timing of this temperature drop remains uncertain, but a trend towards below-average temperatures is expected as November progresses.
