Plane Makes Unconventional Takeoff from Utah Highway

In an extraordinary event in St. George, Utah, a small aircraft demonstrated an unconventional method of taking off. After being forced to make an emergency landing on a highway last month, the plane successfully took to the skies again from the same road.
Emergency Landing and Repairs
The plane made an emergency landing near the Southern Parkway while approaching St. George in October. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported during this incident.
Rather than transporting the aircraft away for repairs, its owner opted for a more efficient solution. They sought assistance from Red Mountain Aero, a local mechanic, to conduct the necessary repairs while the plane remained off the road.
Innovative Takeoff Plan
Once repairs were completed, a unique challenge remained: how to get the aircraft airborne without a traditional runway. Collaborating with the Utah Highway Patrol and the Utah Department of Transportation, the plane’s owner devised a plan.
To facilitate this unusual takeoff, they decided to temporarily slow down traffic. This involved creating a safe window for the aircraft to taxi onto the Southern Parkway at 3000 South and utilize it as a makeshift runway.
Successful Takeoff
On a Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m., this plan was executed seamlessly. The aircraft lifted off the makeshift runway and completed its flight back to St. George in just 13 minutes.
Community Support
- No injuries were reported during the emergency landing.
- Traffic control measures were implemented without incident.
- No speeding tickets were issued during the operation.
This event underscores the creative problem-solving spirit among the local community and aviation enthusiasts in Utah. Utilizing a highway for an unconventional takeoff highlights the potential of innovative thinking in unforeseen circumstances.
