Seattle Mariners Hold Key Advantage in ALCS Showdown

The Seattle Mariners have taken a crucial lead in the American League Championship Series (ALCS). They defeated the Toronto Blue Jays in two consecutive games, giving them a strong 2-0 advantage as the series shifts to Seattle for Games 3 and 4. With just two more victories, the Mariners could reach the World Series for the first time in their 49-year history.

Mariners’ Bullpen Shines

Scott Braun, co-host of “Foul Territory,” shared insights on the Mariners’ performance during their ALCS matchup. He noted that the strength of the Mariners’ bullpen has been particularly impressive. Key players like Matt Brash and Andrés Muñoz have performed well, even as Brash returned from injury.

Initially, there were concerns about the bullpen’s effectiveness after the trade deadline. The Mariners acquired lefty Caleb Ferguson but lacked established depth. However, Eduard Bazardo and Gabe Speier have emerged, stabilizing the bullpen during the postseason.

Postseason Performance

In their first two ALCS games against the Blue Jays, Mariners’ relievers combined for nine shutout innings, allowing just one hit. Overall, the bullpen has restricted their playoff opponents to only seven runs over 33 1/3 innings, a standout performance for the team.

  • Combined shutout innings: 9
  • Hits allowed: 1
  • Total runs allowed in playoffs: 7
  • Total playoff innings pitched: 33 1/3

Contrasting Bullpen Performances

In stark contrast, the Blue Jays have struggled with their bullpen. They have allowed six runs and ten hits over just 8 1/3 innings in the series. Additionally, the Blue Jays’ bullpen has given up a significant portion of their postseason runs, struggling during their AL Division Series against the New York Yankees as well.

Braun highlighted the clear advantage the Mariners hold in this category. The Blue Jays must now rely on pitchers like Shane Bieber and possibly Max Scherzer, who are dealing with their own challenges.

This competitive edge from Seattle’s bullpen could be the defining factor in the series. As the ALCS progresses, all eyes will be on the Mariners as they aim to make history.
