Violence Erupts: Arrests Made at Pro-Palestinian Protest in Lahore

Violence has erupted in Lahore, Pakistan, leading to significant unrest and arrests during a pro-Palestinian protest. The protest, organized by the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), aimed to express solidarity with Palestinians through a march to Islamabad.

Police Response to Protests

Authorities confronted TLP supporters starting Friday, utilizing tear gas and batons. In retaliation, protesters launched stones at police.

On Saturday, police escalated their response by firing tear gas and rubber bullets as demonstrators attempted to breach barricades. Deputy Inspector General Kamran Faisal reported that more than 100 police officers have sustained injuries during the clashes.

Casualties and Arrests

Faisal stated that protesters were responsible for significant property damage, including the burning of a police vehicle. Over 100 arrests have been made, with the TLP claiming the number to be around 700 of its supporters.

Many police personnel remain unaccounted for, heightening concerns about their safety.

Background of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan

The TLP is known for its hardline stance on Pakistan’s blasphemy laws. It gained popularity during the 2018 elections and was temporarily banned in 2020 due to violent responses to international incidents involving blasphemy.

Protest Scale and Government Precautions

  • The TLP protest attracted between 8,000 to 10,000 participants.
  • Key roads to Islamabad have been blocked using shipping containers.
  • Mobile internet services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi have been suspended for public safety.

Impact on Lahore Residents

Lahore, home to over 14 million people, is experiencing significant disruptions. Residents have reported that the streets are closed off, making it difficult to commute or receive necessary services.
