Yashasvi Jaiswal Argues Runout Decision, Clashes with Shubman Gill During Match

In a dramatic turn during the second Test against the West Indies in Delhi, Yashasvi Jaiswal faced an unfortunate run-out that sparked a heated exchange with captain Shubman Gill. This incident unfolded on Day 2 as Jaiswal added only two runs to his overnight score of 173 before disaster struck early in the session.

Jaiswal’s Controversial Run-Out

The incident occurred on the eighth ball of the day from bowler Jayden Seales. Jaiswal played a well-struck shot to mid-off and made a sudden decision to run. However, captain Shubman Gill opted against the single. Their miscommunication resulted in a disastrous mix-up.

West Indies fielder Tagenarine Chanderpaul responded quickly, retrieving the ball and throwing it towards the stumps. Keeper Tevin Imlach attempted a swift stumping but fumbled the ball just as he was about to dislodge the bails. Jaiswal, clearly frustrated, gestured to Gill, insisting it was his call to run.

A Heated Exchange

Jaiswal expressed his displeasure, telling Gill twice, “Mera call hai” (It was my call), while Gill remained visibly stunned. Amid this, Jaiswal momentarily forgot his dismissal status. Despite the on-field umpire, Richard Illingworth, already signaling his out, Jaiswal hesitated to leave the field.

Debate Over the Decision

Upon reviewing the footage, it appeared that the run-out decision was tighter than initially perceived. However, the umpire did not refer it to the third umpire, causing further frustration for Jaiswal. Only after seeing the replays did Jaiswal acknowledge his dismissal, returning to the pavilion to speak with vice-captain Ravindra Jadeja.

Record-Breaking Performance

Despite the unfortunate run-out, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s overall performance in the match was commendable. He scored 175 runs, reaching his seventh Test century, and equaled Graeme Smith’s record for most centuries as an opening batsman under the age of 24.

  • Notable achievements include:
  • First Indian to score more than 150 runs twice on Day 1 of a Test match in India.
  • Remarkably, Jaiswal did not hit any sixes during this innings, a rarity for his style of play.
  • He managed to hit a stunning 22 boundaries throughout his innings.

While Jaiswal’s potential for a double century was cut short, his spectacular knock continues to draw attention and admiration from cricket fans and analysts alike.
