Kent Faces New Wave of High Street Bank Branch Closures

Five bank branches in Kent are set to close this autumn as part of a new wave of high street bank closures. Lloyds Banking Group has announced that it will close 31 Lloyds Bank sites and 48 Halifax branches across the UK, including four locations in Kent.
Details of the Closures
The following branches in Kent will permanently shut their doors:
- Canterbury: Halifax branch in St George’s Street – Closing on September 28
- Ashford: Halifax branch in Castle Street – Closing on October 13
- Ramsgate: Halifax branch on Queen Street – Closing on October 26
- Gravesend: Halifax branch on Windmill Street – Closing on October 28
- Chatham: Lloyds branch on High Street – Closing on October 5
Impact on the Banking Landscape
These upcoming closures follow a previous announcement in February 2023, when Lloyds Banking Group revealed plans to close 95 branches. If all current closures proceed, the group will operate a total of 531 branches throughout the United Kingdom.
A spokesperson for Lloyds Banking Group emphasized that, despite these closures, the organization offers various banking options. This includes community bankers, Post Office services, PayPoint, and advanced digital solutions, ensuring customers have access to multiple banking alternatives.
Concerns Over Halifax Brand
Recently, there have been discussions about the potential phasing out of the Halifax brand, which has been operational for 173 years. However, no official decisions have been finalized regarding its future. Currently, Halifax will cease accepting new customers by October, with existing customers being gradually transitioned to Lloyds Bank.
Despite these changes, customers will retain their account numbers and continue to be protected under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), which safeguards deposits in the event of bank failures.
