Australia Secures New Deal with ‘World-Class’ Popovic

Australia has secured a vital deal with renowned coach Tony Popovic ahead of their upcoming World Cup opener. The Socceroos are set to face Turkiye in Vancouver during their first group match.

Australia’s World Cup Journey

The Socceroos qualified for the World Cup as runners-up in AFC third-round Group C, finishing behind Japan. Remarkably, they remained unbeaten against Japan throughout the qualifiers, recording a 1-1 draw away and a 1-0 win at home. However, they suffered a sole defeat in the final qualifiers against Bahrain, losing 1-0 at home.

Contract Extension for Tony Popovic

Taking charge of the national team in September 2024, Popovic has now extended his contract for an additional year. Football Australia’s CEO, Martin Kugeler, praised Popovic’s impact, stating:

  • Secured direct qualification for the World Cup for the first time in 12 years.
  • Developed squad depth and laid foundations for future success.
  • Generated excitement among Socceroos fans.

Popovic expressed his enthusiasm for continuing as coach until the Asian Cup in 2027. He emphasized his focus on the FIFA World Cup 2026 and preparing the team for crucial group matches against Turkiye, the United States, and Paraguay.

World Cup Stats and History

This year’s participation marks Australia’s seventh appearance in the FIFA World Cup and the sixth consecutive tournament. They have yet to advance past the round of 16 in their prior attempts.

Notably, their last World Cup appearance in 2022 was significant, as they achieved the remarkable feat of winning more than one match in a single tournament for the first time. Australia has faced challenges in past tournaments, accumulating more match losses than any other nation in the last five World Cups, totaling 10 defeats in 17 matches since 2006.

The Socceroos have also struggled in opening games, losing five out of six appearances, with their only victory occurring in 2006 against Japan (3-1).
