Ex-DfE Civil Servant Named DWP Permanent Secretary

Dame Sarah Healey has been appointed as the new permanent secretary of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). This transition will take place in August, replacing Sir Peter Schofield, who has occupied the role since 2018. Schofield is set to depart after dedicating 35 years to the civil service.
Healey’s Background and Experience
Before joining the DWP, Healey served as the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG). Her tenure at MHCLG is marked by significant achievements over the past three years. She previously held the same role at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) for four years.
During her time at DCMS, she managed critical initiatives such as the Online Safety Act and the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Notably, Healey began her career in Tony Blair’s number 10 strategy unit after completing her university education in 2001.
Key Contributions to Various Departments
Healey has a robust history in civil service, having worked in several government departments. Key highlights include:
- Worked as a director of education funding and strategy at the Department for Education (DfE).
- Led the latter stages of the ‘Building Schools for the Future’ investment program during the Conservative government.
- Contributed to the Cabinet Office’s development of economic policies following Brexit.
Last year, Healey was recognized for her service in public administration with a damehood. Her extensive experience means she brings a wealth of knowledge to the DWP.
Responsibilities at the DWP
As the new permanent secretary, Healey will spearhead welfare reforms, enhance UK pensions, and improve employment prospects for young people. Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden expressed his enthusiasm for Healey’s appointment, praising her outstanding government record. He remarked on the importance of her experience in offering supportive services to citizens at all life stages.
Healey expressed her excitement for leading DWP’s ambitious reform agenda and acknowledged the significant impact the department has on millions of lives. She conveyed her pride in her accomplishments at MHCLG and thanked her former colleagues for their dedication.
Acknowledging Sir Peter Schofield
As Healey prepares to assume her new role, she and McFadden both paid tribute to Sir Peter Schofield for his remarkable commitment to public service over his extensive career.
Dame Sarah Healey’s leadership is anticipated to drive positive change at the DWP, enhancing services and opportunities for individuals across the UK.
