Charlie Taylor Reports Persisting Violence at HMP Long Lartin

Chief Inspector of Prisons Charlie Taylor has raised concerns about persistent violence at HMP Long Lartin. Despite a reported decline in assaults, the level of violence remains significantly higher than in comparable high-security facilities. Many inmates have expressed feelings of insecurity within the prison environment.
High Rates of Self-Harm and Suicide
Self-harm incidents continue to be alarmingly high. In the two years since the last inspection, four prisoners have tragically taken their own lives. Taylor emphasized that many prisoners are enduring unacceptable living conditions, which contribute to these distressing statistics.
Findings from the Latest Inspection
The inspection report released on June 1 highlighted several issues. Despite some progress since previous assessments, key areas still fell short of satisfactory standards. The evaluators focused on four primary categories:
- Safety
- Respect
- Purposeful Activity
- Preparation for Release
While the fourth category, preparation for release, achieved a score labeled “reasonably good,” it remained unchanged from the last evaluation in 2024.
Issues with Staff and Prisoner Relations
The report indicated that interactions between staff and prisoners are inadequate. Particularly, inmates from ethnic minority backgrounds reported experiencing poor treatment. Many staff members do not engage constructively with the prison population, leading to a lack of trust.
Improvements and Continuing Challenges
Governor Babafemi Dada, who took office in 2023, has implemented clear improvement standards. There have been successful efforts to reduce the supply and use of illicit drugs, leading to a marked decrease in positive drug tests.
Current Challenges
Despite these improvements, challenges remain. Staff morale is reported to be low, and a shortage of experienced personnel has impeded effective service delivery. Additionally, prisoners have limited time out of their cells, hindering access to meaningful activities.
Positive Aspects
Some areas within HMP Long Lartin have received praise. The gym and library services are viewed positively, and cell-based educational programs are available for those in need, including those in segregation.
In summary, while certain advancements have been made at HMP Long Lartin, Charlie Taylor’s report underscores a pressing need for further improvements. Addressing safety, staff engagement, and meaningful activity access remains critical to enhancing the overall prison environment.
