Canada Excludes Bombito from World Cup Due to Health Concerns

Canada’s national soccer team is facing another challenge just days before the World Cup. Defender Moïse Bombito has been excluded from the 26-member squad due to ongoing health concerns.
Health Concerns Prompt Decision
Reports from TSN journalist Matthew Scianitti reveal that Bombito’s tibia, which underwent surgery for a fracture, is not sufficiently healed for competition. The Canadian team made this decision prioritizing the long-term health of the player.
Last-Minute Injury Update
Just a week prior, Bombito had expressed confidence in his recovery, stating he felt “100%” ready for the tournament. However, his recent performances raised concerns. He sustained a leg fracture last October and only managed 30 minutes of play in a friendly against Uzbekistan last week.
- In the match against Uzbekistan, Bombito left the field with some difficulty and later applied ice to his leg.
- He admitted to experiencing pain, while coach Jesse Marsch noted that Bombito felt sensitivity in his leg.
Impact on the Team
With Bombito sidelined, Luc de Fougerolles has stepped up, replacing him in Edmonton and starting against Ireland in Montreal. De Fougerolles is now expected to begin the first World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday.
Roster Changes Ahead of the Tournament
The Canadian team has until June 11 to announce a replacement player from their provisional list of 55, which has not yet been made public. Bombito’s absence adds to the team’s difficulties, alongside Marcelo Flores, who suffered an ACL injury in his last club match.
Current Injury Status of Other Players
Additional players currently dealing with injuries include:
- Alphonso Davies (hamstring)
- Jacob Shaffelburg (hamstring)
- Ali Ahmed (hamstring)
- Alfie Jones (ankle)
These developments bring an uncertain backdrop as Canada prepares for the World Cup despite a growing list of injury-related challenges.
