Powerball Launch Looms as National Lottery Ticket Sales Decline

Nationwide lottery ticket sales in the UK have recently faced challenges, prompting significant changes from the National Lottery operator Allwyn. The company has reported a notable decline in sales and earnings for the first quarter of 2026.

Decline in Sales and Earnings

Allwyn, which took over the National Lottery license from Camelot in 2024, recorded a 7% drop in UK gross gaming revenues (GGR). This resulted in revenues falling to €942 million (£814.2 million) during the first quarter. Additionally, underlying UK earnings suffered a more than 50% decrease, plunging from €9 million (£7.8 million) a year earlier to just €4 million (£3.5 million).

Factors Contributing to Decline

  • Comparison to previous year’s sales, boosted by a record EuroMillions jackpot
  • Costs incurred from recent upgrades to the online gaming platform

Technological Upgrades and New Initiatives

Allwyn completed a £450 million tech upgrade aimed at revitalizing its online gaming platform. This ambitious project involved migrating 18 million player records and updating over three billion historical transactions. It also enhanced the lottery’s website and mobile applications, along with transforming technologies for retail partners.

Upcoming Launch of Powerball

In a move to rejuvenate interest and sales, Allwyn is preparing to launch a UK-specific version of the global Powerball jackpot this summer. Players will be able to engage in this massive jackpot game, paying £4 per line to compete against their US counterparts.

Changes to Lotto Game

This upgrade facilitates the most significant overhaul of the Lotto game since its inception in 1994. A revamped Lotto format will debut on June 7, allowing players two chances to win for every £2 ticket purchased in the main draw. This initiative is expected to increase the number of Lotto millionaires from approximately 140 a year to around 345.

Looking Ahead

Allwyn expressed optimism regarding the future of its gaming products, mentioning ongoing developments and the regulatory approval process for additional innovations. The company aims to capitalize on its recent technological advancements to restore growth in the National Lottery segment.
