IndiGo Halts Manchester Flights from August 31 Due to High Costs

IndiGo has announced the suspension of its flights to Manchester starting August 31, which comes less than a year after the route was initiated. High operational costs and airspace limitations have been cited as primary reasons for this decision.

Details of the Suspension

IndiGo, India’s largest airline, began services to Manchester in July 2025, offering three weekly flights from Delhi and four from Mumbai. Following the suspension, there will be no direct air connectivity between Indian cities and Manchester.

In its official statement, IndiGo revealed that the high costs and prolonged flight durations due to airspace constraints made operations increasingly challenging. As part of this operational adjustment, the airline will also return a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft leased from Norse Atlantic Airways.

Challenges Faced by IndiGo

  • Geopolitical developments in the Middle East.
  • Escalating aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs.
  • Severe airspace constraints.
  • Foreign exchange volatility.

These factors have resulted in operating costs that exceeded initial estimates for the airline. Abhijit Dasgupta, Senior Vice President of Network Planning & Revenue Management at IndiGo, expressed disappointment over the decision. He noted that the airline had aimed to enhance its international presence with the Manchester route but faced unavoidable cost increases.

Future Plans for IndiGo

Despite the Manchester flight suspension, IndiGo continues to expand its international services, flying to over 40 destinations worldwide. However, the airline will reduce its domestic flights by 12-15 percent in the upcoming September quarter as a response to rising jet fuel prices linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis and a decrease in travel demand.
