Carney Dismisses Trump’s 51st State Remark Amid Intensifying Trade Talks

Prime Minister Mark Carney recently addressed U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments about Canada potentially becoming the “51st state.” His remarks came amid escalating trade negotiations between Canada and the U.S.
Carney Responds to Trump’s Remarks
During a news conference held in Montreal, Carney dismissed Trump’s statement as a remark from a social media user known for being particularly vocal. He indicated that Canada would not react to every post made by the U.S. president.
“It has only increased in recent months,” Carney noted, highlighting the frequency of Trump’s online statements. This comment followed a question regarding U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra’s own social media activity.
Trade Talks Intensify
On the same day, it was revealed that Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc was in Washington, D.C., engaging in crucial negotiations regarding the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement, also known as CUSMA. This agreement is set for review on July 1.
- Key Date: CUSMA review deadline on July 1.
- LeBlanc’s Optimism: He expressed optimism about renewing the trade deal during his discussions.
LeBlanc characterized his meeting with U.S. officials as productive. His statements reflect a commitment to enhancing cross-border trade relations despite the backdrop of Trump’s controversial comments.
Impact of Trump’s Comments
While Carney refrained from speculating whether Trump’s remarks could hinder negotiations, he affirmed the importance of cooperating with the current U.S. administration. “It’s our biggest trading relationship and our biggest security relationship,” he remarked, underscoring the necessity of maintaining diplomatic ties.
Hoekstra, who supports Trump, had previously indicated that it was time to move past discussions of Canada becoming the 51st state. In May 2025, he stated such comments were settled. When Carney was queried about the appropriateness of Hoekstra’s comments in Canada, he simply responded, “No.”
As Canada continues to navigate its intricate relationship with the United States, the focus remains on substantive trade discussions, despite the noise surrounding Trump’s remarks.
