Montréal Transforms for Tour de l’Île Cycling Event Sunday

Vélo Québec is set to host the Tour de l’Île de Montréal this Sunday, following the cancellation of the previous night’s event. The cycling event offers two routes for participants: a regular course of 30 or 50 kilometers and a discovery route of 65 or 90 kilometers.

Event Details for Tour de l’Île de Montréal

The regular route will be family-friendly, while the discovery route caters to road cyclists. Here’s a breakdown of the event schedule:

  • Departure for family route: 9:15 AM to 10:15 AM
  • Departure for discovery route: 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM

Both routes will start at Parc Jarry, located on Boulevard Saint-Laurent between Jarry Ouest and de Castelnau streets.

Blocked Streets for the Event

In preparation for the event, certain streets will be closed to ensure the safety of participants. Those who were originally registered for the cancelled Tour la Nuit are encouraged to join the Tour de l’Île as compensation.

Reasons for Previous Cancellation

Vélo Québec’s CEO, Jean-François Rheault, cited the unexpected presence of vehicles on the route as a primary reason for the cancellation. Despite the presence of volunteers and police officers from the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), some cars managed to enter the course. Additionally, heavy rain just before the event contributed to the decision.

Route Highlights

Participants on the regular route will explore neighborhoods including:

  • Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension
  • Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie
  • Le Plateau-Mont-Royal
  • Ville-Marie
  • Sud-Ouest
  • Westmount

Meanwhile, the discovery route will take cyclists through:

  • Ahuntsic-Cartierville
  • Dollard-des-Ormeaux
  • Senneville
  • Baie-D’Urfé
  • Pointe-Claire
  • Lachine
  • Ville-Marie

This year’s Tour de l’Île promises to be an exciting event for both new and seasoned cyclists, as they join together to enjoy the beauty of Montreal on two wheels.
