FIFA Revamps Women’s Club World Cup: Libertadores Winners to Meet Barcelona

FIFA has made significant changes to the Women’s Club World Cup, now known as the Copa das Campeãs. This revamped format allows the winners of the Libertadores to debut in the semi-finals against Barcelona, the reigning Women’s Champions League champions. This new structure presents a more challenging path for South American champions.

New Format Details

Under the updated rules, if Corinthians clinch the 2026 Libertadores title, they will take on Barcelona in their inaugural match at the international championship. Previously, the structure was different. In the last edition, Corinthians, who were crowned champions of the 2025 Libertadores, faced Gotham FC in the semi-finals, subsequently meeting Arsenal in the final.

Confirmed Teams for 2027

  • Barcelona: 2023 Women’s Champions League holders.
  • Libertadores Winners: To compete against Barcelona in the semi-finals.
  • América of Mexico: Winners of the Concacaf W Champions Cup, placed in the opposite bracket.

Three additional clubs are still vying for a chance to compete against América in the semi-finals. The current African champions have already secured their spot in the quarter-finals, while Naegohyang from North Korea is set to battle the Oceania champions in the round of 16.

Upcoming Event Information

The 2027 Copa das Campeãs is slated to take place in Miami, United States, from January 27 to January 31. The final phase of the tournament will be held in various stadiums, which are yet to be finalized.
