Elks’ Newell, Barlow Sidelined for Season with Achilles Injuries

The Edmonton Elks face significant challenges as they prepare for the upcoming CFL season. Two of their defensive linemen, Darien Newell and Brandon Barlow, will miss the entire 2026 season due to Achilles injuries.
Injury Updates for the Elks
According to TSN Football Insider Farhan Lalji, both players sustained serious injuries. Barlow has experience, playing 18 games last season. He recorded 35 defensive tackles and was a key part of the defensive line.
In contrast, Newell has not yet made an appearance in a CFL game. His absence will be felt as the team looks to strengthen its defense.
Additional Injuries and Expectations
- Offensive lineman Brett Boyko will start the season on the six-game injured list due to a hand injury.
- Defensive back Benjamin Sangmuah will also miss time with a knee injury but is not expected to require surgery.
- Both players are anticipated to return later in the season.
- Boyko, a four-year CFL veteran, has been with the Elks for the last two seasons.
- Sangmuah was drafted in the second round of the 2026 CFL Draft from the University of British Columbia.
Returning Players for Week 1
Despite the injuries, the Elks will see the return of key offensive players. Receivers Joseph Robustelli and Kaion Julien-Grant are expected to participate in the season opener against the Ottawa Redblacks.
- Robustelli recorded 38 catches for 544 yards and three touchdowns in 12 games last season.
- Julien-Grant had an impressive 57 receptions for 820 yards and seven touchdowns over 18 games.
