Advocaat Confirms Rutten Resigned Voluntarily; Unhesitant in His Return

Dick Advocaat, the newly appointed head coach of the Curaçao national football team, addressed recent criticisms surrounding his return to the position. Advocaat emphasized that Fred Rutten, his predecessor, resigned voluntarily, noting, “I don’t understand what the problem is.” This statement was made during his first press conference since reassuming the role.
Transition of Coaching Leadership
In February, Advocaat stepped down for personal reasons and handed over responsibilities to Rutten. However, Rutten’s recent resignation, announced three weeks ago, raised questions. He cited a need to maintain professional relationships within the team as a reason for his departure. Rutten stated, “There should not be a climate that undermines healthy professional relationships, in both the players’ group and the staff.” Alongside Rutten, press officer Kees Jansma also left the team.
Looking Ahead to the World Cup
Advocaat expressed optimism about Curaçao’s prospects at the upcoming World Cup. “Our goal is to reach the next round. This is unprecedented for Curaçao, and the enthusiasm is incredible.” He acknowledged the challenge presented by competitors such as Germany, Ecuador, and Ivory Coast, stating that while they are perceived as a professional team, even amateur squads can achieve victories.
Differences in Coaching Pressure
He also noted the disparity between coaching in the Netherlands and Curaçao. “The pressure and expectations in the Netherlands are significantly higher,” Advocaat explained. “That makes it enjoyable to take part with Curaçao and aim to surprise everyone.”
Family Support at the World Cup
An unusual decision was made regarding family support for players at the World Cup. Advocaat explained that unlike their counterparts in Germany, Curaçaoan players do not earn high salaries. Taking their families along helps alleviate the emotional toll of being apart during the tournament. “Normally, players return home after evening training. This time, they will stay together in a hotel,” he noted.
As Advocaat prepares for this significant challenge, his enthusiasm and confidence reflect a positive outlook for the team and its supporters as they head into this prestigious tournament.
