Hwy 97 Reopens Amid Penticton State of Emergency Due to Massive Blaze

The ongoing situation in Penticton has prompted the reopening of Highway 97 amid a declared Local State of Emergency. This emergency was enacted due to a massive blaze that erupted at a construction site on May 27.
Highway 97 Reopens Amid State of Emergency
As of May 28, the northbound lanes of Highway 97 remain closed, while southbound traffic is permitted on a single-lane basis. The roadway will be monitored, and a detour is currently in place. Full access to the highway is not expected until June 1, according to Penticton’s fire chief, Mike Larsson.

A total of 10 properties are currently under evacuation orders due to the fire, which began at 453 Green Ave. W. The properties affected include:

- 440 Green Ave. W.
- 450 Green Ave. W.
- 399 Green Ave. W.
- 375 Green Ave. W.
- 395 Green Ave. W.
Residents outside the evacuation zone have been allowed to return home, but officials urge the public to stay clear of the affected areas to facilitate firefighting efforts.
Fire Response Efforts
Over 60 firefighters and 25 RCMP officers participated in the initial response. The fire reached a third-alarm status within minutes of being reported. Efforts to combat the blaze have been complicated by the instability of a construction crane at the site, which is preventing complete access for firefighting crews.
Mike Larsson stated that the high heat and presence of construction machinery contributed to the difficulty of extinguishing the flames. Residents in neighboring communities have provided mutual aid and support.
Community Safety and Preparedness
Authorities emphasize the importance of community preparedness as wildfire season approaches. Mayor Julius Bloomfield acknowledged the challenges faced by the evacuated residents and thanked the emergency responders for their swift actions. He reiterated the city’s commitment to supporting those affected by the fire.
Investigation Status
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with criminality not yet ruled out. Interior Health Minister Josie Osborne expressed concern over the loss of a crucial long-term care facility intended to provide 200 beds in the community, a project that was expected to be completed by 2028.
For residents requiring Emergency Support Services, a hotline has been established at 250-486-1890, available weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
