Oilers Revamp Hockey Operations Staff

The Edmonton Oilers have announced significant changes to their hockey operations staff. These adjustments aim to enhance the effectiveness of their scouting, player development, and analytics departments.

Key Appointments in Hockey Operations

Kirt Hill, formerly the general manager and president of hockey operations for the Edmonton Oil Kings, is now the Oilers’ assistant general manager of player procurement. His responsibilities will include overseeing professional and amateur scouting, along with managing undrafted free agents.

Director of Player Development Role

Andreas Karlsson has received a promotion to director of player development. In this capacity, Karlsson will devise development plans for prospects across various leagues, including the AHL, CHL, NCAA, and European leagues.

Focus on European Talent Acquisition

The Oilers have also established a new group dedicated to talent acquisition from Europe. Toby Salmelainen, who is entering his third season with the Oilers, will lead this group as AGM of European Operations. This initiative underscores the team’s commitment to accessing exceptional hockey talent from Europe.

Additional Promotions within the Front Office

  • Michael Parkatti: Vice President of Analytics and Technology
  • Kalle Larsson: Assistant General Manager of Player Development and Innovation
  • Justin Mahe: Director of Hockey Operations and Player Experience
  • Michael Chan: President, General Manager, and WHL Alternate Governor of the Edmonton Oil Kings
  • Jamie Jackson: Director of Scouting for the Oil Kings

Management Changes Following Playoff Performance

In a related move, general manager Stan Bowman made a significant decision by firing head coach Kris Knoblauch and assistant Mark Stuart on May 14. This occurred after the team suffered a first-round playoff loss to the Anaheim Ducks. This represents the first major management change since Bowman’s appointment in 2024.

Bowman noted, “These talented individuals represent our continued efforts over the past number of months to improve our scouting, player development, and hockey analytics departments. Each area is critical to our success now and in the future.”
