Mboko and Auger-Aliassime Progress at Roland-Garros; Shapovalov Ousted by Faria

At the French Open in Paris, two Canadian players, Victoria Mboko and Félix Auger-Aliassime, progressed to the second round, while Denis Shapovalov was eliminated.
Mboko’s Victory at Roland-Garros
Victoria Mboko dominated her first-round match against Nikola Bartunkova from Czechia. The ninth-seeded player won decisively with a score of 6-1, 6-2, completing the match in just 69 minutes.
The 19-year-old from Burlington, Ontario, converted her sixth break point in ten opportunities and faced only two break points herself, defending one. This marks Mboko’s second appearance at the clay-court Grand Slam after reaching the third round in her debut last year.
Next, she will face Katerina Siniakova, a seasoned player ranked 36th in the world in singles. Siniakova also competes in doubles and is currently part of the top team at Roland Garros alongside American Taylor Townsend.
Auger-Aliassime’s Challenging Match
Félix Auger-Aliassime, the fourth seed in the men’s draw, faced a significant challenge in his first-round match against Daniel Altmaier of Germany. After a grueling five-set battle, Auger-Aliassime triumphed with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7).
- He registered nine aces but struggled to defend against 13 break points, losing five of them.
- Auger-Aliassime managed six breaks himself, crucially narrowing Altmaier’s lead to 4-3 in the fifth set.
Auger-Aliassime will next encounter Argentina’s Roman Andres Burruchaga, aiming to continue his pursuit of a title at Roland Garros.
Shapovalov’s Elimination
In contrast, Denis Shapovalov faced early exit from the tournament. He lost to Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria with a score of 6-4, 7-5, 6-4.
This match was marked by key moments, including Faria’s break to go ahead 6-5 in the second set. Although Shapovalov managed to break back, another break later gave Faria the lead he needed to close out the match.
The 27-year-old Shapovalov from Richmond Hill, Ontario, recorded 10 aces but struggled with eight double faults and a total of 48 unforced errors. His season record now stands at 8-11.
