Maple Leafs to Interview Jay Woodcroft for Head Coach Role

Former Edmonton Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft is set to interview for the head coach position with the Maple Leafs this week. This news was reported by NHL insider Frank Seravalli on Wednesday. Woodcroft, who is 49 years old, previously interviewed for the vacant position with the Los Angeles Kings last week.
Jay Woodcroft’s Coaching Background
Woodcroft, a native of Toronto, has an impressive coaching record. During his two-plus seasons with the Oilers, he achieved a record of 79 wins, 41 losses, and 13 overtime losses. He successfully guided the team through three playoff series before being dismissed after 13 games into the 2023-24 season.
This season, Woodcroft served as an assistant coach on Joel Quenneville’s staff with the Anaheim Ducks. He played a significant role in leading the young team to the second round of the playoffs.
Maple Leafs Coaching Search
The Maple Leafs are actively seeking a new head coach after firing Craig Berube earlier this month. Reports suggest that the coaching search could involve up to 20 candidates with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Currently, interviews are being conducted via Zoom. The team is expected to convene at the NHL Combine in Buffalo next week, where they will reassess their coaching options, potentially leading to in-person interviews later on.
Coaching Market Landscape
Alongside the Maple Leafs, other teams like the Oilers, Kings, and Vancouver Canucks are also in the market for new head coaches. This busy offseason could reshape the coaching landscape in the NHL significantly.
