University of Sussex to Cut 200 Jobs in £35M Savings Initiative

The University of Sussex in Brighton is set to reduce its workforce by 200 positions as a part of its measures to achieve £35 million in annual savings. This announcement comes amid ongoing financial challenges within the UK higher education sector.
Details of Job Cuts at the University of Sussex
The university will initiate a 45-day consultation process starting Thursday to discuss these potential redundancies. The job cuts will impact various roles, including:
- Admissions
- Student Support
- IT Services
Previously, two voluntary redundancy schemes have already led to the loss of 528 jobs over the past year. The trade union Unison has expressed concerns that these additional cuts could increase the pressure and uncertainty for remaining staff.
Comments from University Leadership
Professor Sasha Roseneil, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sussex, described the situation as “regrettable.” However, she emphasized that these were “very difficult decisions” necessary to tackle the financial sustainability issues currently affecting UK higher education institutions.
This move aligns with broader trends in the sector as universities strive to maintain financial viability amidst rising operational costs and fluctuating student enrollment.
